We'll start by examining area. Area is the measure of space occupied by a 2-dimensional shape.

One way to measure area is to find the number of square units a shape covers on a grid. Since this square fits perfectly on our grid we can easily count the number of square units it covers. (Later we'll learn how to use a grid to estimate the area of a circle.)
