A famous example involving many trade-offs is the X-1. It's famous for its 1947 flight with pilot Chuck Yeager, when it flew at Mach 1.06 and broke the sound barrier -- flying faster than the speed of sound. The developers and designers of this plane built it for a specific purpose.
