Well, James Watt, the guy who invented the steam engine, invented the word horsepower to measure the power of his engine. Watt hitched a horse to a machine and found out that the horse could pull about 550 pounds over the distance of one foot in one secound. So one horsepower became the power to lift 550 lbs one foot in one second. | |
