Because a wing is three dimensional, unlike an airfoil shape, air flows differently at the wing tips than over the middle of the wing. The wing tip creates a vortex, or whirlpool of air, that causes drag. The bigger the wing tip compared to the rest of the wind, the larger the vortex, and the greater the drag. |
