Shockwave Installation Instructions
Adapted from the Installation Instructions on the Macromedia website. Please print this out so you can
refer to it when installing Shockwave.
Download Shockwave
On Windows
- Go back to the Shockwave Download Center and click the "download now" button.
If you are looking for a different version of Shockwave than the one that we chose for you
by default, click the "Need a different Shockwave" link in the right column.
- Make a note of the directory where you want to save the Shockwave Installer. Usually the
default directory is the directory where you last saved a file from your browser. You can
choose a different one if you want.
- Write the name of the file you are downloading as it appears in the Save As... dialog
box. Write the filename here:_________________________________.
You can use the "Find..." command to locate the file later if you need to.
*Note for Windows 95 customers running Novell network software: The Novell software will
shorten the Shockwave Installer filename once you download it. For example, "Shockwave
Installer.exe" will become "!Shockwa~.exe". The Shockwave
Installer will still work with this shorter filename.
- Click Save.
On the Macintosh
- Go back to the Shockwave Download Center and click the "download now" button.
If you are looking for a different version of Shockwave than the one that we chose for you
by default, click the "Need a different Shockwave" link in the right column.
- On your desktop, there should be the Shockwave Installer. If it is not on your desktop,
it should be in the download folder of your browser. If you don't know where your download
folder is, use the Finder's "Find..." command to locate "Shockwave".
- If you have a compressed installer file with the extension ".sea.hqx" and no
Shockwave Installer file, you may not have the necessary helper applications to decompress
software downloads. Get Stuffit Expander from the StuffIt
Expander page and then use it to decompress the ".sea.hqx" file.
Install Shockwave
- Quit your browser.
- Double-click the Shockwave Installer icon. Follow the instructions that appear on the
screen.
- Relaunch your browser.
- You can test Shockwave's abitilty to play Director and Flash media by going to the Shockwave Welcome page.
Troubleshooting
If you have installed Shockwave and the movies at the Shockwave Welcome page do not
work, check the following:
- Make sure you have only one copy of your browser installed and that the copy you
installed Shockwave into is the same copy you are using to browse the web.
- If you are running a 16-bit version of your browser with Windows 95, you will receive an
error stating "Could not load plug-in". This is common with subscribers of
America Online and Compuserve. Download the Windows 3.1 version of Shockwave from the
"Need a different Shockwave?" link in the right column and install it.
